Long Beach saw 2 new deaths linked to COVID-19 and 23 new confirmed cases, according to the latest figures released Tuesday.

The update brings the death total to 75 and the number of cases to 1,605, with those who have recovered at about 1,150. Officials said 65 people are currently hospitalized.

City officials warned that the daily number of reported cases continues to fluctuate due to a backlog and heavy demand for testing.

Los Angeles County overall saw a large single-day increase of 1,843 new cases of COVID-19 and 27 new deaths linked to the virus.

“Although this is the highest number of new cases reported in a day, some of these cases are from a backlog of test results,” county officials stated in a release.

Public health officials said they have identified a total of 47,822 cases across the county and 2,143 deaths.

A total of 1,443 people are currently hospitalized, a number state officials are looking at closely to determine which counties can open or should remain closed.

On Tuesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the possibility of loosening restrictions on less-affected parts of the county, but details were not provided.

County officials announced some immediate reopenings of retail and churches under a revised health order late Tuesday.

Long Beach has not said if it will follow suit even though the activities are now allowed statewide as long as local officials give the OK. City officials said they would make announcements related to the new state health orders on Wednesday.
