The Long Beach City Council will hear a slew of impactful items tonight in two sessions – a study session at 3:30pm and an unusually late regular meeting at 7:00pm tonight. We’ll have full coverage of tonight’s decisions and outcomes after the meetings.
In the earlier session this afternoon, the Council will hear and discuss the annual transfer of funds from the Harbor Department to the Tidelands Operating Fund, which pays for coastal expenses such as oceanside facilities and maintenance. They’ll also further examine the issue of possibly instituting an Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) voting system in next April’s elections. See the last paragraph in this article for a clear explanation of how the process works.
In the later 7:00pm session, the Council will hear an update and public comment on the future of the Douglas Park zone near Boeing’s eastside property. Issues surrounding the property include a new Biking Plan and approval of a soundproofing plan for homes that are heavily affected by aircraft noise. The Council will likely approve zoning that will allow some homes to be retrofitted free of charge – thanks to grants from the FAA. The Press-Telegram‘s Paul Eakins talks to a few rattled homeowners who live in the flightpath, but won’t be included in the soundproofing, in this article.
UPDATE: This article originally stated – incorrectly – that the 3:30pm meeting is closed. It is an open study session and public comment is welcome.
