Authorities investigated an explosion Monday evening at a commercial underground vault in Downtown Long Beach.
Long Beach Fire Department crews responded around 6 p.m. to the area of Chestnut Avenue and Third Street where smoke was emanating from an underground vault, LBFD spokesperson Capt. Jack Crabtree said.
“While we we were on scene there was an explosion heard in the same area,” Crabtree said. “There was no fire.”
The cause of the explosion is not yet clear. No injuries were reported, Crabtree said.
Long Beach Police Department officers, meanwhile, responded to the scene to help fire crews with traffic control and clear the areas of pedestrians.
Southern California Edison said there were 1,489 people without power along the areas of Ninth Street, Magnolia Avenue, Long Beach Boulevard and West Broadway on Monday evening, but power was restored as of 9:04 p.m.
