1976 Unsolved Murder Case Brought to Light with Recent Arrest of 73-Year-Old Long Beach Man • Long Beach Post

A 73-year-old Long Beach man has been arrested and booked for murder thanks to an anonymous tip connecting him to a 1976 cold case investigating a fatal shooting, authorities announced today.

Jerry Lee Hires was arrested at his residence Thursday and booked with murder and ex-felon in possession of a firearm. His case was presented to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office today.

The defendant was charged today with one felony count of possession of a firearm by a felon, three priors, according to Shiara Davila-Morales, from the district attorney’s office.

After extensively investigating an anonymous tip received in October 2015, which included the re-examining of evidence and locating each witness to try to re-interview them, Long Beach detectives were able to arrest Hires, officials said in a statement.

Authorities said that on June 13, 1976, 25-year-old Tyrone Patrick of Long Beach, was found by police with multiple gunshot injuries to his upper torso inside an apartment on the 300 block of East 17th Street. Paramedics transported him to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Hires is being held at Long Beach City Jail with a bail set at $2 million.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Homicide Detectives Mark Bigel and Shay Kelley at (562) 570-7244. Anonymous tips may be submitted through “LA Crime Stoppers” by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Editor’s note: this story was updated with a list of charges against the defendant.
