A Los Angeles man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder Sunday night in connection with the shooting of two people in Downtown Long Beach, police said

At approximately 8:19 p.m, officers responded to the 100 block of West Ocean Boulevard regarding a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found a man and a woman both suffering from gunshot wounds to the lower body, according to Long Beach police spokesperson Brandon Fahey.

Police said the victims had been in a common space of an apartment building when they saw an altercation between a man and a female subject. The victims then became involved in a verbal dispute with the man, and the conflict escalated to the shooting, police said.

The suspected gunman, Brandon Anthony Gaither, 33, was arrested shortly after and was booked into jail on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder, one count of assault with a firearm on a person, and one count of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse/cohabitant, according to authorities. Gaither is being held on $2 million bail, said Fahey.

Both victims were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
