The Long Beach Police Department says it’s investigating a murder in the city’s Washington neighborhood where a 41-year-old man was shot to death overnight.

A news release from the LBPD said the shooting happened around 2 a.m. Sunday in the 1700 block of Pine Avenue, which is just south of Pacific Coast Highway. When officers got to the scene, they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body, police said.

Despite officers and Long Beach Fire Department personnel rendering medical aid, the man died at the scene, police said. The 41-year-old victim was identified as Andre McClendon, a resident of Long Beach.

Police said homicide detectives have preliminarily determined that McClendon was shot shortly after being approached by several male subjects who fled in a vehicle before officers arrived on the scene.

The motive for the shooting and details about the encounter with the suspects is under investigation, the department said.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact LBPD homicide detectives Oscar Valenzuela or Leticia Gamboa at 562-570-7244 or submit anonymous tips through LA Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
