A man who stole a Long Beach Fire Department ambulance from a San Pedro hospital this morning drove about two miles before Los Angeles police caught up with him.

The ambulance was stolen from Little Company of Mary Medical Center San Pedro Providence at 1300 W. Seventh Street, Lt. Sharon Brady of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Harbor Station told City News Service. The suspect was undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The LAPD was notified at 2:45 a.m. that Long Beach authorities were tracking the stolen ambulance, Brady said. Officers located it in the 600 block of 18th Street a short time later with the suspect standing outside, Brady said. He had the keys and some fire equipment.

The suspect tried to get back into the ambulance but officers caught him before he could, she said.

The ambulance was returned to the LBFD and the man was arrested on suspicion of grand theft auto, Brady said.
