An argument between the occupants of two vehicles in Downtown Long Beach early Sunday escalated into a shooting and resulted in the DUI arrest of the suspect motorist after he fled and crashed his truck on the 710 Freeway, authorities said.

Police said they responded to a call of gunshots near Fifth Street and Pacific Avenue at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Witnesses told police that it appeared as though the occupants of the two vehicles were arguing in the city parking lot at Pacific Avenue and Fourth Street, said police spokesman Lt. James Richardson.

“Witnesses report that an occupant of one of the vehicles pulled out a gun and fired it several times,” Richardson said. “Both vehicles then fled the location.”

Officers located evidence of a crime scene at the parking lot and recovered bullet casings.

The possible suspect vehicle reportedly fled west toward the freeway, according to Richardson.

A short time later, police received a call that the vehicle involved in the shooting had crashed on the northbound 710 Freeway at Pacific Coast Highway.

When police responded, they found the crashed truck unoccupied.

Responding California Highway Patrol officers said they had taken the driver into custody, while the passenger had fled on foot.

No description of the passenger is available.

Police said no shooting victims have come forward and no injuries have been reported. There is no description of the second vehicle.

CHP towed the suspect’s vehicle and arrested the driver for allegedly driving under the influence.

Detectives are investigating his involvement in the incident. No weapons were recovered.
