An arrest has been made in connection with Long Beach’s first murder of the year, that of 33-year-old Sambo Chhoy, who was killed January 20 in Central Long Beach.
Last Friday, detectives arrested Pomona resident Thearath Sam for the murder of Chhoy. Both Sam and Chhoy are suspected gang members, but a personal dispute, rather than gang rivalry, is believed to be a motive in the shooting.
This week, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed murder and weapons charges against 26-year-old Sam.
Chhoy was found shot in the area of New York Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
