Authorities today identified a man who was fatally shot by Long Beach Police Department officers while he was allegedly armed with a gun in a park in the city’s Cambodia Town area.
Officers responded around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday to a report of an armed suspect in MacArthur Park in the area of 14th Street and Gundry Avenue, according to the LBPD.
The officer repeatedly ordered the man to drop the weapon, but he “did not comply which resulted in an officer-involved shooting,” police said in a news release. He later died at a hospital.
On Thursday, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner identified the man as Donald Washington, 46, of Los Angeles.
Police said they’re reviewing body camera footage of the encounter and “will make that available to the public as soon as possible.”
Police asked anyone with information on the case to contact LBPD homicide detectives Gamboa or Valenzuela at 562-570-7244. Anonymous tips can be sent through Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or lacrimestoppers.org.
