A standoff that lasted more than five hours ended Sunday afternoon after a man suspected of battery and pointing a gun at police was taken into custody, authorities said.
The man, who was not immediately identified, was detained with help from a K9 unit, police said shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday.
SWAT was called to the Central Long Beach home in the 900 block of Gaviota Avenue just before 8 a.m. Sunday morning.
Police at first made numerous attempts to call the man out using a PA announcement, but received no response, said Long Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Arzola.
Roughly five to eight buildings near the scene were evacuated.
The incident began when officers were dispatched at 7:47 a.m. regarding a battery.

At the scene, police said there were actually two victims in the initial battery incident that spurred the call for help. One was the suspect’s father, who was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries; the other was the suspect’s brother, who sustained minor injuries, authorities said.
When an officer confronted the man, he pointed a gun at the officer and fled into the residence, police said.
