A Carson man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder Monday afternoon in connection with the shooting of a woman that also left a 16-year-old bystander injured, police said.

Malik Alim Baird, 25, was arrested around 2:25 p.m. at his home in the 800 block of Meadbrook Street near Stevenson Park in Carson, according to police booking records.

He was booked into jail by the Long Beach Police Department on suspicion of one count of attempted murder, LBPD spokesperson Richard Mejia said. Baird is being held on $1 million bail, Mejia said.

Hours before the arrest, police responded around 9 a.m. to the 4000 block of East 10th Street after reports of a shooting.

Police said a woman was outside her home, about three blocks west of Wilson High School, when she began arguing with Baird. The argument escalated and Baird shot the woman, according to authorities. A 16-year-old boy walking nearby was also wounded by the gunfire, the LBPD said.

Both victims were taken to a local hospital with upper body wounds and are expected to survive, police said. Police described the boy’s injuries as “minor gunshot wounds.”

Police believe that the woman and Baird knew each other, but further details about their relationship or disagreement weren’t immediately available.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
