A $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a hit-and-run driver who killed a suicidal man in Long Beach this spring was approved by the county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.

The victim, Buena Park resident William Mendoza, was fatally struck just after 1:00AM on April 25 near East 7th Street and Loma Avenue, officials said.

“The call indicated a male subject was jumping in front of traffic, in an attempt to be hit, and eventually lied down in the roadway,” according to a Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) press release at the time. “A moment later, officers were notified that the individual was struck by a vehicle and the vehicle fled the scene.”

Police believe the suspect was driving a 2006-2010 white Chrysler 300, based on video of the crash.

Supervisor Don Knabe recommended the reward for information on the incident.

Supervisor Hilda Solis also recommended a $10,000 reward for information about an armed robbery on the afternoon of August 3 at Mayra’s 99 Cent Discount store on the 100 block of South Mednick Avenue in East Los Angeles.

The robber was described as 20-25 years old with facial acne. He wore a black hoodie over a black cap, beige knee-length shorts and black shoes and socks.

Anonymous tips may be called in to Crime Stoppers, (800) 222.TIPS (8477).
