The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office is charging a man with four counts of child abuse and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon after a 4-year-old boy accidentally shot his mother with a shotgun in Norwalk on Wednesday.

Prosecutors said the defendant, Brandon Gilbert Ambriz, left the shotgun in a car the children were regularly driven in. According to police on Thursday, the shotgun was not secured.

The boy shot his mother, who was sitting in the driver’s seat, while he was sitting in the back seat with two other children, police said. Another child sat in the front seat with another woman. The other people in the vehicle were not injured.

The mother was upgraded from critical to fair condition on Thursday.

Prosecutors also allege that Ambriz was convicted of two burglaries, carrying a concealed dirk or dagger and accessory after the fact between 2013 and 2017.

He faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in state prison if convicted as charged. His bail is set at $575,000.
