UPDATE | Authorities today announced the arrest of two teens in connection with the murder of a 19-year-old Downey man near the San Gabriel River in Long Beach earlier this month.

Lakewood resident Jerome Rueben Ortega, 19, was arrested on August 5, a day after authorities found the body of Nick Cubas at the San Gabriel River bike path. Ortega is being held without bail at Los Angeles County Men’s Jail, according to a release from the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD). 

Edgar Miguel Espinoza, 18, of Downey, was arrested on Thursday, August 25, in San Diego “for his involvement in the murder of Cubas,” officials stated. Espinoza was booked on a murder charge and being held at the Long Beach Jail with no bail. 

The coroner’s office determined Cubas died of gunshot wounds.

The investigation remains ongoing.

8/5/16 at 11:36AM | The body of a Downey teen was found near the San Gabriel River Thursday morning, prompting an investigation by Long Beach homicide detectives, authorities said.

Officers responded to the San Gabriel River and Willow Street area at about 6:30AM on Thursday, August 4, to assist Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) personnel with the body, according to a release from the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

The victim was identified as 19-year-old Nick Cubas of Downey.

Authorities are investigating his death as a possible homicide. Cubas may have been fatally shot, though a cause of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, according to the release.
