A 65-year-old Los Angeles man is facing felony charges in what police say was a hit-and-run crash that killed an elderly woman while she was crossing a street in North Long Beach.

The crash happened shortly after 12:15 p.m. Friday on Long Beach Boulevard at 68th Street, according to Long Beach police.

Investigators determined a 2018 Chevrolet Camaro heading southbound on Long Beach Boulevard struck a woman who was walking in a crosswalk, police said.

The victim, later identified as 76-year-old Bertha Mora, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

“The vehicle fled the scene; however, the driver returned approximately 40 minutes later,” police said in a statement.

Officers arrested the driver, Los Angeles resident Eric Dewayne Moody, 65, on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run, police said.

On Tuesday, Moody pleaded not guilty to one count of felony hit-and-run and one misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence.

If convicted of both counts, Moody could face up to 4 years and 364 days in prison, according to prosecutors.

Moody posted $50,000 bail on Tuesday and was released from custody. He is due back in court this Tuesday.
