Police say a 36-year-old woman was fatally struck early this morning when a driver swerved to avoid another pedestrian on a North Long Beach roadway.

The crash happened around 4 a.m. on Cherry Avenue near Curry Street, according to Long Beach police.

Investigators determined a 30-year-old man was driving a 2015 Honda Civic southbound on Cherry Avenue when he saw a man in the roadway, police said. The driver swerved to avoid the man but struck a woman who was also in the roadway.

Police did not disclose why they were in the road.

The victim, identified as 36-year-old Shalanda Young, of Long Beach, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The Honda driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

β€œAt this time, neither speed, distracted driving, nor impaired driving appear to be factors in the collision,” police said in a statement.
