Police are investigating a crash at Ocean Boulevard and the Terminal Island Freeway where a motorcyclist was killed in a collision involving three cars around 7:45 Thursday night.

Investigators believe the motorcyclist rear-ended one vehicle and was thrown from his motorcycle into the roadway, Long Beach police spokesman Sgt. Vince Otto. He may have been driving at a high rate of speed when he collided with the vehicle, an Acura, that was traveling in the same direction, police said.

“The collision threw the motorcyclist into one of the westbound lanes of traffic where he appeared to be struck by two different westbound motorists,” police said. “Neither of the westbound motorists remained on scene.”

The two vehicles that left are described as a dark-colored vehicle—possibly an SUV—and a silver pickup truck.

The motorcyclist, a 58-year-old Huntington Beach man, was found lying in the roadway and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, police said. His name has not yet been released, pending notification of his family.

The first motorist, a 33-year-old Long Beach woman, stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said.

Detectives are still trying to gather more information on the drivers who fled, according to Otto. Alcohol and drugs are not considered to be factors in the crash with the first driver, police said.

Police asked that anyone with information regarding this incident call Det. David Whelan at 562-570-7355.
