A man was shot while driving at the corner of 10th Street and Gaviota Avenue on Tuesday, prompting one of his passengers to drive him to the hospital, according to police.

At about 11:54 p.m., officers responded to a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located casings and two parked, unoccupied vehicles struck by gunfire, said Brandon Fahey, Long Beach Police Department spokesperson.

While officers responded to the area, officers also responded to a local hospital regarding a report of a gunshot victim, said Fahey.

Officers then contacted the victim, who stated he was driving in the area with two adult passengers when an unknown man approached the vehicle on foot and shot him, said police.

One of the passengers took control of the vehicle and drove the victim to the hospital, where he was in critical but stable condition, said police.

The motive of the shooting is currently unknown, but the incident is being investigated as gang-related, said police, and no other injuries were reported.

The LBPD defines gang-related crimes as any crime committed “for the benefit of, at the direction of or in association with any criminal street gang.”
