Long Beach police will hold a DUI checkpoint tonight, June 26, in the eastern portion of the city.

The checkpoint will run from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. somewhere in the department’s East Division, which covers the portion of Long Beach east of Cherry Avenue and east of Signal Hill.

Police said the location was chosen based on data indicating where the most DUI crashes occur.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” LBPD Commander Jeremy Boshnack said in a statement. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

Driving under the influence of marijuana is also illegal and some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving, police said.

A first-time DUI can cost drivers an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, the department warned.

The checkpoint is being funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
