Long Beach police say they arrested an intoxicated driver who crashed while trying to get away from them Friday evening.

The chase started around 6:20 p.m. when an officer spotted someone driving recklessly in a Ford Focus, LBPD Lt. James Richardson said.

“The officer attempted to make a traffic stop of the vehicle on the 710 Freeway at Anaheim St and the driver failed to yield for the officer,” Richardson wrote. “The driver led the officer on a short pursuit before hitting a telephone pole in the area of 19th St. and Harbor Avenue.”

After the crash, the driver tried to run, but officers were able to catch him, according to Richardson.

He was hurt in the crash, so authorities took him to a hospital to treat some minor injuries before he was booked into jail on suspicion of driving under the influence and evading police, Richardson said.
