A 31-year-old man riding an electric scooter died today after he collided with a pickup truck in East Long Beach, police said.
The crash happened at about 10 a.m. on Walton Street just west of Stanbridge Avenue, according to Long Beach police.
Police said the man was riding an electric scooter on Stanbridge Avenue when he turned westbound onto Walton Street and drifted into the eastbound side of the roadway, directly into the path of a 2024 Toyota Tundra pickup driven by a 42-year-old man, police said.
The Toyota driver saw the scooter approaching and attempted to stop, but wasn’t able to in time, police said.
The victim, a 31-year-old man from Long Beach, died at the scene, police said. His name was withheld pending family notification.
Police do not believe speed, distracted driving or impaired driving were factors in the crash.
The crash marked the 27th fatal traffic collision in Long Beach this year. At this time last year, the city had recorded 30 fatal crashes. With 53 fatal crashes last year, it was Long Beach’s deadliest year on the roads in more than a decade.
In response, residents have been pushing local politicians for safer streets, and the Long Beach City Council has sought ways to speed up road improvements.
