A driver was arrested on Saturday after he initially left the scene where he fatally struck a woman who was in the roadway, Long Beach police said.

The crash happened shortly before 5:26 p.m. Police said the woman was in the intersection of 28th Street and Atlantic Avenue when she was struck by the driver, who was traveling southbound.

After the collision, officials said bystanders were able to flag down members of the Long Beach Fire Department to help assist the woman. Despite their efforts, the woman died of her injuries, police said.

The driver, Ronald Quispe, 32, of Long Beach, was booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run after he returned to the area and cooperated with authorities, the Long Beach Police Department reported Sunday.

Quispe was released without needing to post bail, police said. Authorities do not believe speed, distracted driving or impaired driving are a factor in the crash.

The woman’s identity wasn’t immediately disclosed because authorities are still trying to notify her next of kin.

Police asked anyone who witnessed the crash to contact Detective Joseph Johnson at 562-570-7366. Anonymous tips can be submitted through LA Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, online here or by downloading the P3 TIPS app.
