A 28-year-old former EMT was sentenced to four years in state prison today for driving drunk and fatally striking a tow truck driver in Long Beach, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office (LADA) announced.

Raymond Burley III of Los Angeles pleaded guilty on July 25 to a felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Deputy District Attorney Vance Davis said Burley, a former EMT, was driving home on December 9, 2012 from a holiday party when he crashed into a tow truck operator servicing a disabled vehicle on the 405 Freeway at the northbound onramp from Orange Avenue at about 2:00AM.

The impact from the crash killed the tow truck operator, 27-year-old Faapuna Mac Munu.

According to a court testimony, Burley immediately attempted to slash his wrists following the collision.

California Highway Patrol officers arrived at the accident and arrested Burley in connection with the crash.

Evidence presented at a preliminary hearing found that Burley was driving with a blood alcohol content of .11%.

A restitution hearing is scheduled for January 15.
