Police arrested a pair of men suspected of pistol-whipping their neighbors and accidentally setting off the gun during an argument in West Long Beach Sunday afternoon, according to authorities.

The gunfire didn’t hit anyone, leaving the two victims of the attack with only minor injuries, police said.

The assaults happened around 12:55 p.m. outside a home on Delta Avenue near 33rd Street, Long Beach police spokeswoman Arantxa Chavarria said.

“Two separate male adult victims reported they had been pistol whipped by two male adult suspects,” she said. Police said the attack started with an argument that escalated

Officers were quickly able to track the two suspects to their nearby home, according to police.

“A perimeter was established and after some negotiation, the suspects were taken into custody,” Chavarria said.

Officers searched the men’s home and found guns and ammunition inside, Chavarria said.

Police identified the suspects as 37-year-old Joseph Paul Muagututia and 55-year old John Emmanuel Velega.

Muagututia was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and shooting at an inhabited dwelling, according to jail records. He was held in lieu of $250,000 bail, records show.

Velega was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and illegal possession of a firearm. He was released Monday morning on $50,000 bail, according to jail records.
