A driver managed to escape two would-be carjackers in West Long Beach but not before they shot and wounded him early this morning, according to police.

Two men tried to steal the victim’s car in the 2000 block of San Gabriel Avenue around 3 a.m., according to a Long Beach Police Department spokesperson Allison Gallagher.

The victim was able to drive off, and paramedics met up with him a couple of blocks away where they took him to the hospital to treat a wound to the upper body, police said. The injury wasn’t life-threatening, according to Gallagher.

The carjackers fled before police got there, according to the LBPD. Detectives are still investigating. Any further suspect description wasn’t immediately available.

Police asked anyone with details to contact investigators at 562-570-7370 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS or visiting lacrimestoppers.org.
