A traffic collision on the Gerald Desmond Bridge involved eight vehicles, authorities said.

A Hawthorne man was charged with murder among other counts on Thursday for allegedly driving his vehicle against traffic on the Gerald Desmond Bridge in Long Beach while under the influence of alcohol, leading to the death of one man and serious injury of another, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Alvin Ray Shaw Jr., 28, was charged with four counts—including murder, driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury within 10 years of another DUI offense, driving with more than .08 percent blood alcohol content, causing injury within 10 years of another DUI offense and driving with a suspended or revoked license because of a driving under the influence conviction, according to a press release.

The felony complaint includes special allegations that the defendant personally inflicted great bodily injury and that his blood alcohol content concentration was .15 percent or more, nearly double the legal limit of .08, during the commission of the crime, the release adds.

Documents charging Shaw allege he was previously convicted of driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or higher in 2014.

Authorities said Shaw remains hospitalized and they do not know when he will be able to attend court for his arraignment.

On the morning of Saturday, August 1, Shaw allegedly drove his 2012 Mercedes-Benz on the eastbound lanes of Ocean Boulevard at Golden Shore traveling westbound toward the Gerald Desmond Bridge against traffic.

At the crest point of the bridge, Shaw collided with a 2014 Ford Fusion, driven by a 21-year-old San Pedro man, and a 2010 Nissan pickup truck driven by 30-year-old San Pedro resident Miguel Gonzalez.

Both vehicles were heading eastbound in the eastbound lanes of the Gerald Desmond Bridge.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, officers had previously observed the Mercedes-Benz being driven erratically and crashing through barricades in the area of the Special Olympics events.

Officers attempted to follow the car through the downtown Long Beach Bicycle Path after it struck numerous objects, but lost sight of the vehicle.

Police were then directed toward the Gerald Desmond Bridge by witnesses regarding the collision, which caused the Mercedes Benz and the Nissan truck to catch fire.

Gonzalez was declared dead at the scene.

Shaw faces a possible maximum sentence of 18 years to life in state prison.
