Police say a bicyclist was hospitalized after someone in a stolen car crashed into him and then fled the scene Sunday evening near Long Beach City College’s Pacific Coast Campus.

The crash happened around 6:45 p.m. as the bicyclist was riding across Pacific Coast Highway at Gardenia Avenue, which is just west of Cherry Avenue.

A driver in a stolen car hit the bicyclist and kept driving, police said. Rescuers from the Long Beach Fire Department took the injured man to the hospital in stable condition, and police began searching for the car, according to authorities.

Officers soon found the car nearby in an alleyway, but nobody was in it, LBPD spokeswoman Jennifer De Prez said.

“The vehicle had been reported stolen and the owner of the vehicle was contacted by officers,” De Prez said. “The driver of the vehicle remains outstanding.”
