A hit-and-run driver fled the scene after fatally hitting a pedestrian near Washington Middle School on Friday night, according to authorities.

The victim, who police only identified as a man, was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead, according to authorities.

Due to “suspicious circumstances,” Long Beach Police Department homicide detectives are investigating the incident as an intentional act, police said. Police did not describe those circumstances, and any motive is unknown.

The crash happened at around 9:40 p.m. at at 14th Street and Pacific Avenue, police said.
