Update | An unarmed man believed to be under the influence of drugs was fatally shot by a Long Beach police officer Wednesday night after the deceased threatened to attack the officer, Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) officials said in a press release.

According to authorities, the man was acting erratically and was involved in an altercation with friends, which lasted about 10 minutes before the man broke loose from their restraint and jumped through the glass of a second-story window on the 4600 block of East 15th Street.

Officers arrived after they received a call from the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) at about 7:30PM on Wednesday, May 27, to assist with the intoxicated man reportedly acting violently, LBPD spokeswoman Marlene Arrona said.

Once on the scene, a responding officer noticed three male subjects in an alley, with the suspect moving quickly toward the officer as he exited his patrol vehicle, officials stated.

The officer reported noticing the man had a large cut and was covered in blood. The officer then commanded the man to stop walking so he could be given medical treatment, according to authorities.

The suspect then advanced more quickly toward the officer, who utilized verbal commands, an electronic control device, an impact weapon, and physical force to attempt to stop the man.

The man continued to advance toward the officer and allegedly told the officer he was going to attack him, prompting the officer to open fire, officials said.

The man was taken into custody and fire personnel began life-saving measures before transporting him to a local hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

The name of the man will not be released until family members are notified.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation into the incident.

PREVIOUSLY: Intoxicated Man Fatally Shot By Long Beach Police Wednesday Night

05/28/15 11:14AM | An intoxicated man was fatally shot by Long Beach police officers Wednesday night after disrupting neighbors and jumping out of a second-story window from an apartment building, Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) officials said.

Officers were dispatched to the 4600 block of East 15th Street at about 7:30PM Wednesday, May 27, to assist Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) officials with an allegedly intoxicated adult male acting violently, LBPD spokeswoman Marlene Arrona said.

According to witness accounts, the man was acting violently and got into an altercation with neighbors for about 10 minutes, then jumped out of a second-story window to exit the apartment, Arrona said.

Once outside, he continued to be disruptive with neighbors who tried to help when police arrived, she said.

During an officer’s contact with the man, who police say was not complying with officers’ orders, a use-of-force occurred, escalating from less lethal force options to an officer-involved-shooting, according to Arrona.

The man was wounded and transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No officers were injured.

LBPD homicide detectives and investigators with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene, she said.

The investigation is ongoing.

This is the fourth officer-involved shooting of the year, and the second fatal officer-involved shooting of 2015. In an April 27 interview, Lt. Lloyd Cox of the LBPD said the shooting of Hector Morejon was the first fatal shooting of three officer-involved shootings in Long Beach this year.
