UPDATE | The man killed by Long Beach police at a Long Beach arcade while waving a knife from a chair and disregarding police commands Monday has been identified as 39-year-old Mharloun Saycon of Carson.

Saycon died at the scene, according to Los Angeles County Coroner’s Assistant Ed Winter.

As previously reported, police were dispatched at 10:08PM to the Looff’s Lite-A-Line Casino Game of Skill at 2500 Long Beach Boulevard Monday night, responding to reports of a man with a knife, Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) Sgt. Brad Johnson said.

While the officers were en route, another report stated the man was waving the knife, resulting in some customers fleeing for their lives. Another report said the man had been thrown out of the business before for being disruptive.

Officers stated that when they were at the scene, the man disregarded “verbal commands to drop the knife” after discovering him seated in a chair, still armed with a knife. The officers then tried a “less-lethal electronic control device and baton, and neither less-lethal force was effective. An officer-involved shooting occurred.”

PREVIOUSLY: Knife-Wielding Man Shot, Killed by Long Beach at Arcade

11/15/15 at 10:50AM | Long Beach police shot and killed a man wielding a knife at an arcade Monday night after trying less-lethal tactics, according to officials.

The police were dispatched at 10:08PM to the Looff’s Lite-A-Line Casino Game of Skill at 2500 Long Beach Boulevard last night, responding to reports of a man with a knife, Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) Sgt. Brad Johnson said.

While the officers were en route, another report stated the man was waving the knife, resulting in some customers fleeing for their lives. An additional report also said the man had been thrown out of the business before for being disruptive.

Officers stated that when they were at the scene, the man disregarded “verbal commands to drop the knife” after discovering him seated in a chair, still armed with a knife. The officers then tried a “less-lethal electronic control device and baton, and neither less-lethal force was effective. An officer-involved shooting occurred.”

Police said they began life-saving measures, and Long Beach firefighters arrived on the scene to continue the effort, until the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

No others were injured, and a knife was recovered at the scene, according to Johnson.

Additionally, limited portions of the incident were captured on video, which will be reviewed by Homicide detectives and the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office, according to a release issued by the LBPD.

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office will determine the suspect’s identity and notify next of kin.

As is the case with all officer-involved shootings, the LBPD will conduct a review of the incident through a multi-step process that “evaluates legal, policy, tactical and equipment issues,” the LBPD stated. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will also conduct an independent investigation of the shooting, as they do with every officer-involved shooting that ends in death. 

Northbound Long Beach Boulevard was closed from Burnett to Willow streets while police investigated the incident. The street was reopened at 6:29AM this morning, according to an LBPD email alert.
