Long Beach Police officers are searching for a suspect who fatally shot a man in the Willmore District on the night of Sept. 4.

The victim was shot multiple times in the upper body in an alleyway in the 700 block of West Melrose Way, a few blocks away from Cesar E. Chavez Park. The victim, who has been identified as 27-year-old Dylan Baskins, was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Baskins died two days after being shot. Due to the severity of his injuries an investigation by homicide detectives had been opened the night of the shooting. Those detectives were notified Sept. 10 that Baskins had died. A LBPD spokesperson could not comment on why there was a delay in notifying the department of the death.

In a press release sent out Thursday evening, the LBPD said there is currently no information about the suspect or the motive for this incident. However, the shooting is being investigated as gang related, the statement said.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call Long Beach Police Department Homicide Detectives at (562) 570-7244. Anonymous tips can be submitted to 1-800-222-8477 or texted to 274637 (CRIMES).
