A Long Beach man was arrested Thursday afternoon after he was found to be in possession of a firearm while being chased by police, authorities said.

While patrolling the area of Obispo and Pacific Coast Highway at about 1:30PM, Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) stopped 21-year-old Emanuel Barragan of Long Beach for a traffic violation he made while riding a bicycle, said LBPD spokeswoman Marlene Arrona.

Barragan refused to stop when ordered by police and fled from the bicycle, leading officers to pursue him to the 1700 block of Coronado Avenue, where he pulled a handgun from his pants pockets and threw it, Arrona said.

Barragan finally stopped and was arrested. The recovered gun was found to not contain any ammunition. Barragan was also found to be in possession of a substance believed to be methamphetamine.

Barragan faces charges of traffic infraction, ex-felon in posession of a firearm, resisting/obstructing arrest and possession of a controlled substance, Arrona said. Barragan is currently being held at the Long Beach Jail, with bail set at $35,000.
