A 39-year-old Long Beach man has been arrested on suspicion of trying to sexually assault an 84-year-old woman in a Santa Monica alley, according to police.

Officers responded around 9:30 p.m. on June 5 to the area of Sixth Street and Wilshire Boulevard after reports of a woman screaming for help, according to the Santa Monica Police Department.

Authorities said the suspect, Pape Tall, grabbed the woman from behind and dragged her into a nearby alley in an alleged attempt to sexually assault her.

He fled northbound before being located and arrested near Fifth Street and California Avenue, police said.

Tall faces charges including kidnapping and assault with intent to commit rape, as well as a probation violation. He remains in custody without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on July 9.

The case has been submitted to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing, police said.
