A 23-year-old Long Beach man was sentenced Thursday to 12 years in state prison for a 2013 shooting involving a child victim, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office (LADA) announced Friday.
Prosecutor and Deputy District Attorney Rachel Hardiman said the defendant, Raymond Rene Rodriguez, got into a fight with another man near Del Amo Boulevard and Long Beach Boulevard on March 22, 2013.
Hardiman said that during the fight, Rodriguez brandished a gun and shot the other man, who was armed with a knife.
Two people, including a boy who was with his family at a nearby gas station were struck by stray bullets during the altercation. The child was immediately taken by authorities to a hospital for medical treatment.
Rodriguez fled the scene following the shooting, Hardiman said. He was located and arrested more than a year later by the Long Beach Police Department.
Rodriguez pleaded no contest to one felony count of assault with a firearm and also admitted to gun and gang allegations.
According to an independent search of jail records by the Long Beach Post, Rodriguez has been arrested at least seven times since May 2013.
