3/6/2020 at 12:42 p.m. | Long Beach detectives have arrested a Hawaiian Gardens man on suspicion of shooting a man to death in a North Long Beach parking lot in 2018, authorities announced Friday.

Police originally didn’t know anyone was hit in the July 26, 2018 shooting. When they responded to the scene of the crime around 9 that night, officers didn’t find anyone who’d been wounded in the shopping center parking lot on Cherry Avenue near the 91 Freeway, the LBPD said.

However, that same day, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a shooting victim inside a vehicle in the city of Bell Gardens. The victim, 24-year-old Los Angeles man Salvador Corrales, succumbed to his injuries, according to the LBPD.

The evidence LBPD collected at the scene in North Long Beach connected Corrales to the Long Beach shooting and LBPD detectives assumed the investigation two days later, according to police.

“Through their investigation, detectives identified 23-year-old Steven Manzo of Hawaiian Gardens as the suspect responsible for the shooting,” police said. “Detectives have collected evidence suggesting Corrales and Manzo were known to each other and agreed to meet in the parking lot, where they became involved in a dispute, which led to the shooting.”

Detectives arrested Manzo Thursday near his home in the 22300 block of Horst Avenue in Hawaiian Gardens. He was booked into jail on suspicion of murder and was being held on $2 million bail. Detectives expect to present their case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office early next week, police said.

Court records show Manzo has a recent string of lower-level convictions. He pleaded no contest to possession of drugs while armed and pleaded guilty to DUI and driving on a suspended license in 2019. He also pleaded guilty to drug possession and no contest to vehicle theft 2017.

Police asked anyone with information on the shooting is to contact homicide detectives Oscar Valenzuela and Eric Thai at 562-570-7244. Anonymous tips may be submitted through LA Crime Stoppers by calling 800-222-8477 or by visiting crimestoppers.org.
