UPDATE 4:05PM  |  More than 30 uniformed Long Beach Police officers stood in formation at the Signal Hills Animal Hospital Tuesday afternoon to pay respects to K-9 Credo, who was killed earlier in the day during an officer-involved shooting.

About a dozen locals also showed up to pay respects, including Long Beach resident Josie Gavieres and her 11-year-old dog Groucho.

“We thought we’d come out today just to show our support because we know what it’s like to lose a partner,” Gavieres said emotionally.

Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) command officers and Councilman Daryl Superknaw were also in attendance.

Mayor Robert Garcia sent out a tweet in response to the killing of Credo.

Long Beach Post reporter Stephanie Rivera is live on Periscope at Signal Hill Animal Hospital, where Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) personnel and community members have gathered to pay respects to LBPD K-9 Credo, who was killed today during an officer-involved shooting.

After the ceremony, Credo’s body will be escorted to a second facility, where an autopsy will be performed.

Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) K-9 Credo, who was killed in the line of duty today during an officer-involved shooting, was four years old, according to the LBPD.

Credo, a Belgian Malinois, served alongside his handler, LBPD Officer Mike Parcells, working Patrol and Narcotics. He was involved in the apprehension of over 30 suspects during his two year career. 

ois-credo-alley-2UPDATE 1:31PM  |  The suspect in an officer-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday morning has died, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) Deputy Chief Richard Conant.

Around 9:00AM Tuesday morning, LBPD officers were conducting an investigation on the 2800 block of E. 15th Street, involving a male suspect wanted in connection with multiple shootings involving multiple victims, Conant said. The shooting occurred during the course of the investigation, and both LBPD K-9 Credo and the suspect were injured. 

Credo was transported to Signal Hill Animal Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. 

The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

Between 2:45 and 3:00PM police will hold a ceremony at the veterinary hospital to salute Credo and escort his body to a second facility, where an autopsy will be performed.

UPDATE 12:49PM | A Long Beach Police Department K-9 who was injured during an officer-involved shooting Tuesday morning has succumbed to his injuries, according to the LBPD. The K-9, named Credo, was taken to the Signal Hill Animal Hospital after the shooting, though it is still unclear how he was injured.

UPDATE 11:56AM | An officer-involved shooting that occurred while Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) officers were conducting an investigation regarding a male suspect wanted in connection with an assault with a deadly weapon case left the suspect and one LBPD K-9 injured, according to LBPD Spokeswoman Marlene Arrona. 

ois-credo-alleyThe suspect was transported to a local hospital, his condition unknown. The injured Police K-9 was transported with unknown injuries to Signal Hill Animal Hospital. No other LBPD officers were injured.

Residents near the scene of the shooting were evacuated to Robert E. Lee Elementary, according to authorities. The school is now on lockdown. Lee Elem

According to the LBPD, parents will be able to pick up their children at their regular dismissal times, and should meet them at Orizaba and 17th Street, due to street closures.

Temple and Orizaba avenues, between 14th and 16th streets, as well as any streets within the perimeter, will remain closed for the next several hours. U.S. Marshals and LBPD SWAT teams are currently at the scene of the shooting.

10:52AM | Long Beach police are conducting an investigation in the city’s Zaferia neighborhood this morning regarding a male suspect wanted in connection to an assault with a deadly weapon case.

The investigation, which began at about 9:00AM Tuesday near the 2800 block of East 15th Street, has authorities establishing a perimeter near an apartment complex where the suspect is believed to be located, said Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) spokeswoman Marlene Arrona.

Authorities have closed Temple and Orizaba avenues, between 14th and 16th streets.
