Long Beach police have scheduled a DUI checkpoint Friday night in the northern portion of the city.

In a statement, the department said the checkpoint would run from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. somewhere in the department’s North Division, which covers most of the city above Wardlow Road.

Police said the location was picked based on data about DUI crashes.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Commander Jeremy Boshnack said in a statement. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

The department warned that a first-time DUI can cost drivers an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties.

The checkpoint is being funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
