Long Beach officers took an armed suspect into custody Wednesday afternoon after he attempted to rob a person in a garage in the city’s Alamitos Beach neighborhood, authorities said.

Police responded to a robbery call of a person on the 400 block of Walnut Avenue, in their garage, at about 2:50PM on Wednesday, January 20, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

Witnesses indicated the suspect was a man armed with a firearm, LBPD spokeswoman Nancy Pratt said.

Officials said a perimeter was then established near Eighth Street and Gardenia Avenue, where the suspect was seen heading and possibly hiding.

A small contingent of SWAT officers, an LBPD police helicopter and a K-9 unit then responded to the incident.

Eventually, the suspect entered an occupied home, causing the resident to run out, leaving the suspect alone inside, Pratt said.

When the suspect left the home and tried to flee, a K-9 was able to subdue him. The suspect was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a minor injury, according to officials.

A gun was recovered near the scene, authorities said.

No loss was reported in the attempted robbery.

Once medically cleared, the suspect will be booked for attempted robbery and possibly other charges, Pratt said.
