Now that Long Beach Unified School District students are on winter break, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) has provided safety information for parents to share with their children, including the city’s curfew laws.

Officials remind the public that anyone under 18 years old cannot remain in or upon any public place between 10:00PM and 6:00AM.

“Our experience has shown us that youngsters who are on the street after curfew are more likely to become victims of violent crime, and also are more likely to become involved in criminal behavior,” the LBPD stated. “We are reminding parents that it is important for you to know where your children are at all times, and to ensure they get home safely before curfew.”

The LBPD also advises everyone to practice the following safety tips:

  • Do not make it obvious that you have an iPod, cell phone, or other electronic device
  • Whenever possible, avoid using your electronic device on the street
  • Don’t display your valuables in public (money, jewelry, etc.)
  • Always be alert and aware of your surroundings and the people around you
  • Stay in well-lighted areas as much as possible
  • Places that make you vulnerable include dark parking lots, walkways, alleyways and restrooms
  • If you feel someone is following you, move to a well-populated area
  • Travel with a friend; there is safety in numbers
  • Walk close to the curb and avoid doorways, bushes, and alleys where someone could hide
  • Report suspicious activity immediately by calling 9-1-1

Police officials also caution against underage drinking, citing the potential for youth to become victims of crimes due to vulnerability and the increase of them engaging in unsafe behavior.

“The effects of alcohol impairs judgment, affects physical coordination, and may prevent one from maintaining control of their body,” officials stated. “It may also cause an individual to ignore their morals and values, resulting in poor decision making such as driving under the influence.”
