A 40-year-old man tried to assault a woman at his home and then broke into a house about a block away, where he holed up for hours until SWAT officers moved in to arrest him, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Police said the attempted assault may have been related to a domestic violence incident at his home on Lime Avenue Thursday, but when officers got to the scene, he was already gone.

Later, around 3 p.m., police got another call about the man reporting he’d broken into a house near Olive Avenue and 20th Street, according to the LBPD.

The man barricaded himself inside, and officers surrounded the property to make sure he couldn’t escape, police said. Soon, police K9s, a helicopter and SWAT officers were called in.

“Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and get the suspect to surrender, but the suspect refused to comply with officers’ commands,” Long Beach police said in an unsigned statement. “After some time, officers entered the barricaded residence, at which time the suspect surrendered to officers without incident.”

Jail records show he was taken into custody on suspicion of burglary, criminal threats, possession of unlawful paraphernalia, and obstruction of justice. Police said he was held on $50,000 bail.
