School officials say a Long Beach Poly High student was wounded in a shooting this morning, roughly a block from the school.

The shooting happened at about 10:15 a.m. on Atlantic Boulevard, just south of 15th Street, Alejandro Vega, the school’s principal, wrote in an email to students, parents and staff.

Police said a man walked up to a group of teenage boys, pulled out a gun and opened fire. No information was released on a motive.

The victim, a 16-year-old boy, was taken to a hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower body, police said.

The boy was a student at Poly High, according to the Vega.

The suspect fled before officers arrived and no suspect description was immediately available.

“Our campus remains safe, and there was no impact on school instruction,” Vega wrote in the email. “As an added precaution, LBUSD School Safety will maintain an increased presence around our school.”
