A Long Beach teen was booked on assault with a deadly weapon and a host of other charges early Monday morning, after he led officers on a pursuit that ended with a SWAT team helping arrest him, authorities said.

Officers responded to a shots fired call near West Ninth Street and Cedar Avenue at about 3:45AM on Monday, February 8, Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) spokesman Brad Johnson said.

Arriving officers attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle leaving the area, but the vehicle failed to yield and a short pursuit ensued, according to Johnson.

“During the pursuit the suspect backed into and rammed one of the pursuing police vehicles,” he said.

The vehicle then crashed near 20th Street and Cedar Avenue and the suspect fled on foot.

A containment perimeter was established by officers and the SWAT team was then activated.

Officers eventually arrested a 16-year-old Long Beach resident at about 6:45AM. The perimeter was broken down at 7:43AM.

The juvenile was booked in Long Beach on charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, auto theft, felony evading, hit and run and resisting arrest, Johnson said.

Neither the officers nor the suspect were injured.

The investigation remains ongoing.
