Long Beach police say they’ve arrested a man on suspicion of stabbing a woman to death after an argument on Sunday afternoon.

Officers were first called to the 1400 block of Chestnut Avenue at 1:10 p.m. about an “unwelcome person call” that turned into a stabbing, police said.

When officers got to the courtyard of an apartment complex, they found a woman on the ground with stab wounds to her upper body, according to the LBPD. They tried life-saving measures on the woman until paramedics got there and took over, but the woman died at the scene, police said. Authorities identified her as 35-year-old Vanessa Chacon from Long Beach.

Police said they later arrested 23-year-old Daquan Ross at his home in Los Angeles on suspicion of murder.

They believe Ross and Chacon knew each other and were arguing on Sunday. The argument escalated to an assault and the stabbing, police said. They could not confirm the relationship between Ross and Chacon and they do not yet know the exact motive for the attack, police said.

Ross is being held in jail on $2 million bail. Detectives will present the case to the district attorney’s office later this week, police said.

Police asked that anyone with information about this incident call detectives Michael Hubbard or Ethan Shear at 562-570-7244. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous can call 1-800-222-8477 or visit www.lacrimestoppers.org.
