A man was arrested Tuesday morning after police say he burglarized a business near Long Beach’s Zaferia neighborhood shortly before being shot in an unrelated crime.

The man, who was not publicly identified by police, broke into a business near the 3000 block of East Anaheim Street, which is near Orizaba Avenue, just after 1 a.m., according to the Long Beach Police Department.

He remained in the area until someone in an unknown vehicle approached him and shot him after exchanging words for a short time, police said.

Police said they responded to the area but the man and suspects had fled before they arrived.

Officers were later called just before 2 a.m. to the 1100 block of Stanley Avenue, just west of where the shooting happened, where they found the man suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body, police said.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the area and transported the man to a local hospital for treatment, police said, adding that his injuries were not life-threatening.

Eventually, investigators identified the man in the hospital as a suspect in the earlier burglary, police said.

Once he was medically cleared, police said, he was transported to Long Beach City Jail for booking. Police did not say what charges the man will be booked on.

A motive for the shooting remains under investigation, police said. At this time, there is no evidence to suggest that the shooting was related to the earlier burglary, police added.
