A felon armed with a loaded handgun was arrested last week, the Long Beach Police Department announced over the weekend.
The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Demetrius Pickens of Long Beach, was reportedly seen pointing a gun at people on the 2100 block of East 17th Street at about 1:30PM Wednesday, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
“East Division Officers who were flooding the area working special enforcement efforts due to recent gun violence incidents located the suspect at Temple Avenue and 17th Street,” the LBPD said.
The officers then attempted to detain the suspect, who fled and led the officers on a foot chase.
Officers were able to catch up with the suspect at Molino Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway, where he continued to resist arrest and physically fight with the officers attempting to take him into custody, causing minor injuries to the officers involved.
Pickens was eventually taken into custody, and a loaded gun as well as narcotics were recovered. Further investigation found that Pickens is a registered sex offender and was currently in violation of his parole.
He was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, possession of narcotics, ex-felon in possession of a firearm and parole violation.
He is currently being held at Long Beach Jail with no bail.
A jail records search by the Long Beach Post found that Pickens had been arrested at least two times prior since March 2014.
