A man was taken to the hospital in critical condition after being shot during an argument a few blocks north of Downtown Long Beach this morning, according to authorities.

His wounds were serious enough that police called in homicide detectives to take over the investigation.

Police said the shooting happened around 3:45 a.m. on 10th Street just west of Long Beach Boulevard.

“Detectives believe the location was an illegal gambling establishment,” LBPD spokeswoman Arantxa Chavarria said.

When officers arrived, they found one man who’d been shot in the upper body and another man who had minor injuries, Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer De Prez said.

Police think both men were victims, and officers quickly found the suspected gunman who was taken into custody inside the same building, police said.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe the suspect fired his firearm during a verbal altercation,” police said.

All three men were taken to the hospital, although it wasn’t immediately clear how the suspect was injured.

Police said he would be booked into jail after being treated.

Detectives found a gun at the scene and are still investigating, police said.

This is at least the second time in recent months someone has been seriously wounded in a shooting at a suspected illegal gambling location in Long Beach.

Earlier this month, SWAT officers raided another suspected gambling house near Anaheim Street and Stanley Avenue.
