Man dies after being hit by 3 cars as he was crossing the street, police say

Police say a man died after being hit by three vehicles — two of which fled the scene — while he was trying to cross a street in Long Beach.

The crash happened just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday on Pacific Avenue, just north of Pacific Coast Highway, according to Long Beach police.

A man in his 50s was walking eastbound across Pacific Avenue, outside of a marked crosswalk, when he stepped off the center median and was struck by a white SUV, said LBPD spokesperson Andres Bonilla.

A dark-colored sedan and a third vehicle, a 2021 Jaguar sedan, also struck the man, Bonilla said. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he died. His name was withheld pending family notification.

The Jaguar driver, a man in his 50s, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, he said.

Detectives do not believe speed, distracted driving or impaired driving were factors in the crash.

Sunday’s fatal crash was Long Beach’s 34th of the year, just behind 2025’s pace – which saw the highest total of fatal wrecks in more than a decade. At this point last year, the city had tallied 36 fatal crashes.
