A motorist died after driving into a tree in Long Beach, authorities said today.

Officers were dispatched at about 10:50 p.m. Saturday to Willow Street and Easy Avenue in West Long Beach, police said.

They found a 2002 Toyota Camry in the center median of Willow, which had struck a tree.

“The driver, a single occupant, had been removed by other citizens who rendered aid,” police said. “The driver was later transported to a local hospital by Long Beach Fire Department personnel, where he later succumbed to his injuries.”

Police said the preliminary investigation revealed that the victim, traveling east on Willow, was driving erratically and swerving between lanes prior to the collision.

Alcohol and speed are being investigated as possible contributing factors to the collision.

The identity of the driver, a 60-year-old Long Beach resident, was withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
