A man escaped unscathed after being held at gunpoint during a failed carjacking Wednesday night in a West Long Beach alleyway, police say.

Police responded around 7:25 p.m. to the 1700 block of West Anaheim Street after reports of a carjacking followed by shots being fired, Long Beach police spokesperson Richard Mejia said. When officers got to the scene, they found the victim who said he was driving in an alleyway when the driver of a dark-colored SUV stopped in front of his car, Mejia said.

The driver of the SUV got out of his car and then approached the victim’s vehicle, police said. The suspect then opened the victim’s car door and ordered him to exit his car while pointing a gun at him, Mejia said.

Fearing for his safety, the victim exited his vehicle and began fleeing the area when he heard gunshots ring out, according to the LBPD.

When the suspect attempted to flee with the victim’s car, it stalled, prompting him to get back into his SUV and leave before police could arrive, Mejia said.

At this time, there is no information on the suspect. Bullet casings were recovered at the scene and the investigation is ongoing, Mejia said.

More shooting deaths, increase in ghosts guns have LBPD focused on untraceable firearms
